Brett told Aspen we would take her to her favorite church where her best friend attends. She was so excited she said, “Really? I’d do anything to go there!” Brett seeing his opportunity for a less complicated morning replied, “Oh, so that means you will drink your green drink without complaining or procrastinating.” Aspen, who learned about quick replies from her daddy said, “Uhhm, I didn’t mean that kind of anything.”
“I didn’t mean that kind of anything.” It’s easy enough to commit to a better more healthy diet for example, until someone offers us cheesecake, or hot from the oven chocolate chip cookies, or whatever our favorite indulgence is. It’s also easy enough to commit to be a Christian, until the opportunity comes along to partake in our favorite little indulgence.
Jesus told his disciples to “Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” Matthew 6:9-13
It’s easy to say, “Your will be done.” It’s also just as easy to say, “But, I didn’t mean that kind of anything.” From personal experience it is hard to remember every moment of every day to practice the presence of God and do His will in everything, but that is what He calls us to do. Everyone of us.
