Do You See What I See

Have you ever noticed how many “types” of skies there are?  I guess I had forgotten as my years in the Las Vegas desert erased the images of any types of skies other than sunshiny bright or, for 7 days out of the year, overcast and rain.  Those were pretty much the only two we got.  Now that we are on the east coast with more recognizable seasons, I’m amazed at all the different types of skies you can see.  For sure there are sunshiny bright days and overcast rainy days, but there are also wispy cloud days, rolling thunder-cloud days, crispy clear sky days and an ongoing variety of skies with subtle differences that make them distinctly unique.  So why all this talk about the sky?  I just wanted to remind you and me about what the sky tells us everyday about God and us.

“God called the sky Heaven.  This was the second day of His activity on earth, marked off by nighttime and daytime.”  (Genesis 1:8)

On the second day of creation God created the sky.  What a great reminder of God’s love to us.  “Neither height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God.”  (Romans 8:39)  The height of the sky is immeasurable, just like God’s love for us.  We live in a finite world, so it is hard to imagine God’s  immeasurable love for us.  In our imperfectness we have levels of like and love for others based on their “performance”.  Are they pretty? Good at sports?   Like the same political party I do?  In the same tax bracket?   Have the same religious beliefs as I do?

God’s love for us is unbiased.  Unconditional.  It doesn’t matter to Him if I ride the bus or drive a Mercedes.  Sling a backpack I picked up at Goodwill over my shoulder or carry a Coach purse.  He even loves you and me after the big meltdowns in our lives just as much as before.

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known.”  (Psalm 19:1-2)  God created the heavens and despite their lack of actual vocal cords they proclaim the glory of God.  Every day they speak it, every night they tell about Him.

God created the sky and the earth.   The sky has no feelings, it doesn’t love God, but it can’t help but proclaim to everyone the greatness of God.  God created you and me. Let us give thanks and praise His name for the many wonderful thing He does for us day and night.  “Give thanks to the LORD because He is good, because His mercy endures forever.”  (Psalm 107:1)

Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.                          1 Chronicles 29:13 NIV
