Cry For Help

Today has been a crazy busy day.  It’s 11:13 p.m. as I begin to type these words.  My day started 17 hours ago at roughly 6:15 a.m. when I woke to the sound of Aspen calling for someone to come snuggle her after a bad dream woke her up.  The day then continued to be a seemingly never-ending stream of “cries” for help from students with bad grades, students with confusion on homework, students who are just confused in general, student’s with relationship issues and so on and so on.  It’s also a big weekend of activities for Campus Ministries, which is a large part of my job here.  We had a special guest artist performing for our school assembly who needed help in getting the sound set up.  Later we set up for an evening concert which involved more sound set up and special lighting.  There was also the decorating of the event area complete with cafe’ tables, which I built, hanging string lighting and creating a cozy, intimate atmosphere on the stage.  Sprinkled in there were also a special drama practice, a run-through for the big student-led Christmas worship service for church tomorrow, (which I’m also responsible for), making sure the food was ready for tomorrow’s afternoon activity, running down all the Veggie-Tales Christmas movies, a 15-minute lunch and the whirlwind kisses and “I love you” to Miranda and Aspen as I dashed in and out of the house several times throughout the day.

Now, I’m not sharing this because I’m hoping you’ll feel sorry for me or anything…though you are certainly welcome to.  It’s just that, everything I was doing today was in direct support to some aspect of ministry for the kids.  That’s a good thing, right?  But in the mad busyness of it all I’ll tell you, I felt a lot more like Martha than Mary.  A lot of it was fun, I really enjoy teaching and youth ministry, but I can’t say it was uplifting.  I got a lot done, and helped a few people along the way.  But I think the day would almost have been something of a loss if God hadn’t tapped me on the shoulder and reminded me to ask a question I should ask myself every day; Where is He in all this?  That thought I thank my wife and God for planting in my overheated, busy brain.

Miranda has been on the journey of writing this blog for almost an entire year now.  I’m really proud of her for what she’s done and have been moved to laughter, thoughts and tears along the way.  But the biggest gift of, “The Morning Muse” has been what it did for me today: reminded me to look for God in the everyday things of life around me.  Miranda has seen spiritual and life lessons in overflowing trash cans, broken down cars and countless other common, ordinary things in life.  I think that’s one of the things Jesus did also.  He looked around himself and found common things that surrounded people everyday and made spiritual lessons from them we call, “Parables.”

So here is what I’m encouraging you and I to do: ask ourselves, everyday, whatever we are doing wherever we are doing it, where is God in it all?  God says that He will never leave us or forsake us.  This means that He is embedded in our daily lives, way more than we know.  Look for Him, He’s there…He’s always there.  Many times you will find Him in the most unexpected places in your day.  Then, when you find Him, tell someone else about it.  There are people out there who need to hear your experiences to remind themselves to look for God in their lives too…people like me.
