We once rented a house where the septic system was so backed up that one morning as I took a shower upstairs Aspen yelled up at me from downstairs that water was pouring all over the living room floor from the toilet in the bathroom.  The landlady had failed to tell us this sort of thing happened occasionally.   Getting the whole system cleaned out proved to be quite the experience, but once everything was cleaned out of the pipes everything flowed smoothly once again.

Now maybe I shouldn’t compare our souls to a septic system, but occasionally junk, called sin, blocks the water of life from flowing freely through us.  Just like drains need some Draino or a snake to help clear them, we usually need some help from the Holy Spirit to clear the clog in our spiritual lives.  Once the junk in our life gets cleared away God’s love and joy can flow freely through us.
