Tonight Brett and I made donuts for a youth group meeting. Brett can’t resist buying the latest kitchen gadget so we ended up with several donut makers from Bed, Bath and Beyond. The kitchen was unable to handle all three donut makers, a large hot water pot for hot chocolate and the microwave making popcorn without blowing the breaker. Brett finally ran a long extension cord from another room to run enough donut makers to keep the kids supplied.
The kids lined up eagerly awaiting their turn for hot donuts with powdered sugar glaze and sprinkles. Several of the kids thanked us effusively for takeing the time to make the donuts. Then one of the other adults pointed out that we were just the kids ticket to a sugar fix. That burst a few of my, “wow, isn’t it great the kids are enjoying this” bubbles.
It made me wonder how God feels when people go to church and try to do and say the right things, not because they want to be His friend, but because they want to be first in line when He starts to hand out blessings.
I can understand that outside of making fresh donuts for the kids I may not be the coolest person around. But, God is God! He is so much more than just someone to hang around with to get stuff from. First of all He allowed His son to die so that horrible, awful, sinful persons like me can live forever with Him in heaven. After just that one thing we should be doing everything for Him and hardly expect Him to do more for us. Lucky for us, God loves us and wants to be our friend more than anything.
I don’t call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn’t know what his master is doing. But I’ve called you friends because I’ve made known to you everything that I’ve heard from my Father. John 15:15
