Just Like Dad

Today I took Aspen to a class where the teacher asked everyone what they wanted to be when they grew up.  There was the usual assortment of veterinarian, ballerina, police man, and so forth.  One little boy about five spit out a mouthful, he said he wanted to be a worker for the Transportation Department of Pennsylvania.  My guess is that is this little boys father works for the Transportation Department of Pennsylvania.

Little children want to do things just like their parents.  As we live in the presence of our Father in heaven we automatically want to do what He does.  “….God is light, and there isn’t any darkness in Him.”  (1 John 1:5)   The light of God illuminates truth, happiness, wisdom, purity.  “Christ is the Light; we will shine reflected light if we walk in his light.  If we give forth light it will honor God.”  (Matthew 5:16)  The smallest light in the darkness is of great use.

Brett usually previews my blog posts for me but due to the content of this one I may skip that step.  Today since Brett is on  summer break he went grocery shopping with me.  Since the town we live in does not have a health food store we drive about 30 minutes to the next town.  We successfully completed our shopping in record time, hitting up all three of the usual stops.  Unfortunately we had gotten a late start and as we exited onto the freeway it was 5pm.  Just in time for rush hour traffic.  Now I will tell you a little known secret about my husband: Sitting in traffic frustrates him immensely.  So he took the first exit off of the freeway as I turned on the GPS.  It took longer than expected for the GPS to acquire the satelites.  I punched in HOME and the GPS then let us know that we needed to make a u-turn and head back the direction we had come from.  Brett decided to pull over and look at a road atlas we had recently acquired on our trip home from NYC.  All in all by the time we got back to where we had begun our detour 20 minutes had passed by.  By the time we got on the correct detour we had spent about 30 minutes of time.  The usual time it takes to get back home anyway.  When all was said and done it took an hour to get home on a back road that required slowing down for small towns and stopping at stop lights along the way.

Sometimes the detour that seemed like a great idea, isn’t.  Take Abraham for example.  God had promised him a son, and by human standards he and his wife Sarah had waited an exceptionally long time.  But they got tired of waiting and Abraham had a son with the maid when he was 86 years old.  Fourteen years later the son that God had promised was born to Abraham and Sarah when he was 100 years old.  Oh, the trouble they would have saved themselves if they had not taken a detour but continued to wait on the promise of God.

God’s promises are true.  Take for example Matthew 11:28-29,  “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”  When troubles come along rather than taking the time to learn to trust God to take care of our lives we rush on and worry about our problems.   God tells us that if we learn from Him we will have rest for our souls.  “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”  John 14:27
