Static

Yesterday while driving on the road trip I reached over and hit the scan button on the radio looking for the Christian music radio station.  I found it and enjoyed the music while driving.  But you know how it is when you listen to the radio while driving hundreds of miles on the freeway.  Eventually you hear static, for a while it comes and goes and eventually you lose the station all together.  Then it is time to hit the scan button again and start the process all over.

Our spiritual lives seem to suffer from static as well.  When we first invite God into our lives He is so close and we can hear Him quite well, but then the static arrives; too busy, too tired, too little of something or too much of anything seems to cause a static in our reception of God’s words to us.  God doesn’t change, He loves us and wants to share His beautiful music with us.  We are the ones who move too far away to hear.

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.  Matthew 6:33 NLT

Traffic Jams

We walked through the front door of ‘home sweet home’ about an hour ago.  The mission trip came to an end and we spent the day driving a van full of teenagers back home from the mission trip.  There were several times today while driving that all of a sudden the traffic would slow down.  Not for long, just enough to be annoying.  It didn’t take long to figure out each time that what was slowing people up was the sight of a police car on the side of the road.

Just as I was lamenting the ridiculousness of people slamming on their brakes in a gut reaction to seeing a police car this thought hit me: are we like that with God?  Do we slow down and pay attention to Him when we have a momentary encounter with Him only to speed back up and zip along as if He didn’t exist when He is no longer within view?  God would love to be friends with us……He doesn’t want us to slow down in fear just because He is around.  He would rather play the role of protector in our lives rather than enforcer.

For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son.   Romans 5:10
