About twenty years ago, when I had a newborn, two and five-year old, my dryer quit working! My ‘now ex-husband’ didn’t seem interested in fixing it or finding someone else to fix it so I decided to see about fixing it myself. I can look back now and sigh at my stubborn ignorance. I knew absolutely nothing about how to fix a dryer or any other appliance for that matter, but I did not let that fact stand in my way. I tend to believe the old saying, “Where there is a will, there is a way”.
I looked at the dryer and seeing two screws that held the very top part of the dryer with the buttons on it to the rest of the machine, I took a screw driver and unscrewed them. I lifted it up and took a look. I looked at the back side of the start button. I noticed that there was a small strip of metal attached to it and in my curiosity about how things work I pushed the button to see what would happen. Nothing happened. But I did see that the small strip of metal was probably supposed to be making a connection with the piece of metal behind it. So I bent out the small strip of metal and pushed the button again. Viola! The dryer started! Oh happy day! This was a major accomplishment in my life; I had fixed the dryer!
When my ‘now ex-husband’ arrived home I excitedly explained how I had fixed the dryer. He remained unimpressed with my skill and casually asked if I had unplugged the dryer before working on it. I’ll have to admit it was a stupid move on my part and it did take a small amount of wind out of my sails as I said, “No” I had not unplugged the drier. But, twenty years later I still feel a sense of accomplishment when I think about fixing the broken appliance.
Sometimes we can be like that drier. It was plugged in. We are plugged in. We go to church, go to prayer meeting, go on mission trips. But like the dryer that was plugged in but not connected, unless we are connected to the Source of Power we will not be ‘drying the clothes’ so to speak.
I pray that out of his glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being. Ephesians 3:16
