Richard and Janes Breakfast Fiasco

Jane opened her eyes and looked at the clock.  6:30 am already!  She hopped out of bed and padded towards the kitchen.  Opening the freezer door she took a frozen hashbrown out of the box and put it in the toaster oven.  Next task, the omelet.  She opened the refrigerator door and took out the peppers, onions and tomatoes.  She pulled out the cutting board, picked up the knife then quickly sliced and diced the veggies.   Crack, crack, a couple of eggs were added and the omelet started to sizzle in the pan.  Then she dropped a slice of raisin bread into the toaster.   Jane looked forward to eating her favorite breakfast.

Jane slipped the omelet onto a plate and sat down at the table.  She had just finished spreading butter and jelly on her toast when she heard Richard shuffle into the kitchen.  “Breakfast smells great, honey.”  Jane glanced up to see Richard reaching for her hashbrown.  “You don’t usually eat breakfast, sweetie.”  “I know, but I have some long meetings at work today and thought I would fortify myself with a little something,”  he said after swallowing the last bite of hashbrown and picking up her fork and slice of toast.  Jane watched Richard inhale her breakfast.  When he was finished he looked up at Jane, “Hey sweetie, I’m going to need to take your car to work today, mine is all out of gas.”  Janes chin dropped, “And how do you propose I get to work this morning if your car is all out of gas?”  Richard smiled his best charming smile, “I don’t know, leave early I guess and put gas in the car.”

It’s easy to “like” Jane in this story and to automatically “dislike” Richard and his actions.  But, God doesn’t stop to think about it like that, He loves everyone.  He wants Richard to live in heaven with Him just as much as He wants to spend time with a “nice” person like Jane.  It’s hard for us to comprehend that, it’s also hard for people like Richard to comprehend that.  What’s really hard is to have so much of God’s spirit in you that you love Richard and feel about Richard’s salvation the way God does.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it:  Love your neighbor as yourself.  Matthew 22:37-39.

We can’t love our neighbor as ourselves until we first love God with all our heart, soul, and mind.
