Slip Sliding Away

The day is overcast, slushy and a little foggy.  The snowfall from last night has just barely covered the grass.  I’m sitting here at the computer looking out the window and kitty has joined me at the desk checking the feeders for her favorite show.  No birds yet, it’s not quite light enough.

The weather outside today reminds me of the 10 winters I spent in Alaska.  Ten winters of driving on snow and ice packed roads.  I spent the first nine of those years driving a two-wheel drive vehicle.  Needless to say I was a very careful driver.  We lived about 10 miles out-of-town and I learned which sections of the road were likely to be iced over with black ice and at which times of day and in what kind of weather conditions that would happen.  I got pretty good at mentally predicting when and where the cars would go off the road.

So many cars went off the road right before Deadmans Curve.   First of all; What was Deadmans Curve?  One side of the road went straight up the side of a mountain, while the other side went straight down to the ocean.  And the word curve was a little deceptive, it should have been curves.  There was no edge to the road, you were either on it or not.  And second of all; Why did so many cars go off the road right before Deadmans Curve in icy road conditions? The drivers realized too late they needed to slow down before entering the curves of Deadmans, hit the brakes and slid off the road.  This was one of those rare times in life when I learned from other people’s mistakes.  Despite my two-wheel drive vehicle, I stayed on the road!  I may have been driving like grandma, I may have caused a lot of people behind me to swear, but I stayed on the road.

Life can get a little curvy at times.  Deadmans curve looms just ahead and it’s so easy to proverbially crash and burn.  The Bible offers great examples of people who already made the mistakes we would like to avoid.  Pick it up today and stay on the road!

Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in His law does he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.  Psalms 1
